van der Zalm, John Peter

Passed peacefully, in his 93rd year, at the QHC North Hastings Hospital, Bancroft on September 21st with his family at his bedside.  Beloved husband of Evelyn and the late Mary (Scholtes) (2000), and loving father of eight children:  Anne (Paul), Frank (Angie), Mary, Cathy, John (Maryanne), Paul (Mirjam), Anthony (Karen) and Terri (Mark).  He is also survived by twenty grandchildren:  Lia (Jeremy), John (Siri), Rianna (Mike), Dave (Kate), Steve (Meghann), Peter, Patrick (Sonja), Kate, John, Anna, Michael, Jenna , Jamie, Stefani (Brent), Krista (Jeremy), Matt , Danielle, Diana (Matt), Danielle and Justin.  Also survived by 16 great grandchildren, his brother Jim (Mary) and sister Barbara (Arnold), sisters-in- law, Mary, Anne (Neil), Lia, Toos and Stein Scholtes and 5 Stolte step-children: Charles (Linda), Christopher (Cheryl), John (Robin), Peter and Ann-Marie.  Survived by many nieces and nephews throughout Ontario, P.E.I., Australia and the Netherlands are included in the extended family.   John was the eldest of Jacobus and Anna Maria van der Zalm and he was predeceased by his sister Cor, and his brothers Hans, Clemens, Ted, Arnold and Kees.

John arrived in Canada in 1950 with his wife Mary, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage.  He farmed, landscaped, joined Dofasco where he worked for 21 years.  He retired from this career to become the general manager of the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Association plus he and his wife, Mary, embarked on owning and operating Sunrise Lodge for 27 years.  John loved the north, was passionate about his faith, his family and his country.  He spent his last years with his loving wife Evelyn surrounded by the beauty of Paudash Lake. Always a hard worker, he was joyous to be Canadian.  He will be fondly remembered by many.

 

Visitation, Mass of Christian Burial and Reception

 

Friends are invited to call at the M. G. DALY FUNERAL HOME, 2OO Old Hastings Road, Maynooth, ON (613-338-3259) on Monday, September 24, 2018 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.

A second visitation will take place at the MARKEY-DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 1774 King Street, E. Hamilton, ON Wednesday, September 26, 2018 from 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at ST. FRANCIS XAVIER CHURCH, 304 Highway #8, Stoney Creek, ON, on Thursday, September 27, 2018, at 10:00 a.m.

Interment to follow, at Grimsby Mountain Cemetery, 59 Elm Tree Rd. E., Grimsby, ON L3M4E7. 

As expressions of sympathy, donations to Our Ladies of Lourdes Church, 2761 Monck Rd., Cardiff, ON for masses and memoriums, the Warehouse of Hope and Wells of Hope.  Arrangements entrusted to M.G.
