James, Thomas John

  Jan. 11, 1925 - March 16, 2017

Tom was born in Cornwall, England to parents Violet and Glencan James.  He had five sisters, three of whom still survive.

He was inducted to the British army and served in World War II.  He moved to Canada in 1956.  Tom taught upholstery and woodworking in the Kernahan Park High School in St. Catherines, and assisted in coaching the rowing team there.  Later he and his wife, Helen, owned and operated the James Health Foods store in St. Catherines.  They retired in Cardiff in 1986.

Tom's favourite hobbies were reading, listening to classical music, hiking, and cycling.  He loved to discuss politics, astronomy, literature, environmental and health issues - as well as tell a good joke.  He was a peace activist, and a socialist; in later years a member of the Green Party.  He was a proud vegetarian for over 40 years.

Tom passed away in the Centennial Manor in Bancroft, where he had been a resident for nearly two years.

Special thanks to all the staff there for the wonderful care that Tom received.  Cremation has taken place at Lakefield Crematorium.  As expressions of sympathy, donations to Home Again would be appreciated by the family.  Arrangements entrusted to M.G. Daly Funeral Home, Maynooth.  (Cards available at the funeral home (613) 338-3259 or e-mail condolences to This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it or visit www.mgdalyfunearalhome.com).
