It is with profound sorrow that the Caloren family wishes to announce that Fred died unexpectedly early on Saturday April 30th, 2016 in Whitney Ontario at the age of 82. He leaves his wife Heather (Burns) and his children Noëlle, Marc (Mathilde), Claire (Martin Bielz), Maurice Viau (by adoption), his grandchildren Astrid, Loïc and Anaïs and his sister Martha MacIver and nephews John and Andrew. A man of many facets, Fred will be remembered for his intellect, lofty ideals and commitment to social causes; his love of people, his community mindedness and a sense of practicality. He had many personal interests including reading, birding, wilderness canoeing and cross-country skiing.Fred graduated from the University of Toronto with Masters in Political Economy and in Theology (Knox College) then spent four years in France with Heather pursuing his doctoral studies at the Université de Strasbourg. This cemented his life-long love of the French language and culture. Upon returning to Canada, he settled in Ottawa where he spent his career teaching at the University of Ottawa in the Department of Sociology, and where he and Heather raised their family “en français”. Fred’s love of nature and passion for the outdoors was instrumental in his decision to retire in Whitney, bordering on Algonquin Park. There he made many new friends and continued his engagement in community affairs. In recent years, Fred confronted significant health challenges yet his inquisitive mind, love of family, friends and community spurred him on to live every day to the fullest. He will be deeply missed. To celebrate Fred's life, the family will host a community luncheon at the Whitney Seniors' Centre (9 Third Avenue) on Saturday May 14th at 1pm. A private gathering of close friends and family will be held in Ottawa at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County.
