Son of Walter Leslie Sutherland and Anetta Marion Young.  Father of  Christine (Tina) Johnston (Randy), and Susan Sutherland (Mark). Grandfather of Joshua (Michelle), Carleigh (Cory) and Sarrah (Kieran)

.  Brother of Norman Sutherland (Edith), and uncle to Valerie (Stephen), and great uncle to Dayna and Tristan.  John was raised on a farm in Monteagle with his parents and later moved to a home north of Bird's Creek. John completed Grade 12 in North Hastings High School. After School had a summer job was at a local creamery. General Motors in Oshawa was hiring so once applied, got the job. He met and married Constance (Connie) Wannamaker and they moved to Whitby so that John could be closer to his work.   John spent 16 years at General Motors, then was asked by his brother to move to Bancroft to construct houses at a newly developed subdivision. A cottage was renovated to a home and the move was made.

An opportunity was presented by the owners of the Bancroft Bargain Barn and John took over the flooring business and Connie operated the clothing department. In the early 80's John was diagnosed with M.S. The first couple years, they managed on their own, but it was evident that more staff was needed to continue a successful business. Staff of mostly family and friends, worked under John's direction. Sutherland Supply operated successfully for 10 years. M.S. was taking its toll and as a result the business was sold, and John moved to his family home north of Bird's Creek. While attending a local M.S. meeting, John met a young lady who also had M.S. Time passed and they became fast friends, Heather moved in and took care of him for many years. When Heather passed away, daughter Susan left her employment in Kitchener and moved in to take care of her dad. With the help of visiting PSW'S, family and loving care of Susan, they were managing.  John's health situation worsened to the point that even local available health care people were unable to give him the care he needed so desperately. After a great heartfelt decision, John insisted that he be moved to a nursing home where he would be constantly under doctors and nurses care. An opening came up in Marmora so that is where he resided until he was able to come back to his hometown Bancroft,  where he also received excellent care from the Manor staff.  No matter what John's current situation was, he always had a smile on his face, quick to laugh at a joke, and always said " thank you " when receiving medication. He was a loving, honest, talented, hard working, caring, man. In his younger days, John enjoyed having family around, especially grandchildren, camping, fishing, playing cards, snowmobiling, and listening to country music. His little dog, Sweetie Pie gave him a great deal of pleasure when her favourite place to be, was on his knee. At John's request, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will take place at The Quinte Health Care Professional Building (Lower Auditorium Manor Lane, Bancroft) on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 12 Noon.
